Organizing a toddler’s room turns out to be quite different than organizing one fit for a baby. Perhaps that’s just my experience. When Gemma was a newborn I had items in her room perfectly arranged, so I knew exactly where to access them. Once my maternity leave was over, this sweet little utopia of a room quickly became a colorful hot mess. These days my fiercely independent 15-month old wants to do everything herself, including pulling out toys and books. I worked with HomeGoods to reorganize her “toddler room” room that allowed her a bit more independence and me a few corners of controlled clutter.

Painted wire baskets to match her room were the perfect storage solutions for the ever growing amount of stuff we keep accumulating. How does this happen, by the way?? I feel like I clean things out every few weeks, but they just keep multiplying. Exactly how many stuffed animals does one very small person really need? Apparently, ninety-seven.
I walked around HomeGoods like a kid in a candy store through all the aisles lined with bins, baskets, tubs, and totes. There wasn’t a dud in the bunch, which made choosing a challenge. Finally I settled on these items as the magical tools to make sure the nursery never gets cluttered again. Hah! Because surely, buying these would ensure a spotless floor. I was really excited about the acrylic jewelry organizers to be used on the open shelving above the changing table too.
Let’s just call this basket central. Gemma can pick her books, toys, and even throw her clothes in the laundry. Yes, she likes to do this…and then she takes everything out of the hamper and rolls around in it.
Having a clear divider bin like this has already been nice. Because it’s so small, it’s perfect for all the little leggings and capris. I brought it to the living room where I was folding laundry and organized the pants on the spot. Then I stuck it in her dresser. Maybe this is what all moms do, and I’m just late to the party. This made things so much easier than trying to fold tiny clothes and then later transport them to the drawers in crumpled piles.
This is the little gadget I was most excited about. These days Gemma’s average time on the changing table is about 3 seconds. Having all of her hair accessories out, organized, and ready to grab quickly has been nice. I think the necklace tree has found it’s second purpose in life. It is the perfect headband carousel.
Since the very small closet in Gemma’s room is actually used for my clothes, we’ve been using her book shelf as an open “closet”. I picked up a few more felt lined hangers at HomeGoods. I’m not sure how much longer we can hang her clothes here…Already the 18 month dresses are too long. We might change this to a shirts only section, and I’ll give up a bit of room in my closet for her things. Oh, the joys of a 1940’s home. Sometimes I visit my friends’ homes and literally marvel at the enormous closets. We tend to store all our off season clothes in bins we stash in the attic or basement. Next on the list was Gemma’s bin.
I’ve been procrastinating getting her tub of clothes organized for a while. Instead of folding up the tiny clothing with care, I stuck them in plastic sacks and dumped them in a tub. Sadly, this has been my practice for the last year. Finally, I got them separated into categories; newborn-6 months, 6-12 months, and shoes and swaddles. These peach fabric bags are adorable and fit much more than I originally thought they would. Even though these will go back in the attic, I love that the color matches Gemma’s nursery.
It’s amazing how much better I feel when things are in their proper spot. It makes me want to tackle a dozen more projects. Every other room in my house could use an overhaul, but at least for now the nursery is good to go. Home Goods is a favorite place of mine. So many great finds there. I like the way you have the clothes separated into size categories – so much more convenient and easy to find what you are looking for that way.

I love the whole look!
Oh to decorate/organize a little girl’s room! I have 3 boys and just did their closet with some free commercial grade melamine shelving that my Dad gave us from one of his jobs (that was just getting thrown away!) and laundry baskets. It’s wide enough to store 5 baskets on each of the 3 shelves, plus 4 more on the floor. It’s been amazing to feel like everything has it’s place. Definitely therapeutic! Now, it’s onto the master closet which needs a ton of help!
I know what you mean about Home Goods and being a kid in a candy store….I don’t think I’ve ever left empty handed…there’s always something (if not more) in there that I want…..love the idea of the headband carousel.

I’m so glad it’s not just my 15 month old that turns their room into a mess to end all messes! Earlier this week I found quite a few of my socks in my sons wardrobe where it appears he has been making some sort of nest. I’d love to get some of the wire baskets but he’d only wear them as a helmet. Or worst case scenario – make me wear one as a helmet… Still, beautiful room you’ve made – I love me some IKEA soft toys!
Oh yeah, it’s bad. Nothing in our house if EVER where it should be;/// Thanks for the sweet words:)
