I have gobs of family photos, but most of them just live on my computer. The one “golden ticket” family photo gets printed for Christmas cards, but the rest never leave the hard drive.

Do you ever get sucked in by weight loss infomercials? You know the ones with the drastic before and after pictures and people in workout gear giving testimonials? Then there’s the way too chipper announcer who makes it all sound so easy, “Just try this (diet, juice, pill, exercise) for 30 days and this could be you!”
Meanwhile on the couch, you’re eating potato chips.
You try to stop watching because suddenly you feel a little too aware of the chips (and extra lbs.) hanging out in your lap, but you just can’t bring yourself to change the channel. No? Am I the only one who does this?

There’s something you should know about me…I am a recovering perfectionist. In my early twenties, I channeled that unhealthy tendency into dieting and working out.

Do you ever wish you could just start over from scratch with the things in your home? Do you have a room that stresses you out just thinking about it? I’ve definitely felt that way. (Even as a designer!) I want to share something that’s completely transformed how I approach my own home and those of my clients. It may seem counterintuitive, but I really think it’s the most important thing you can do for your home.
And it doesn’t cost a dime.
Let me back up a bit…After several years in our fist home, I finally felt pretty good about furnishing each room. But I constantly had this nagging sense that things still weren’t right. I always felt like a room just wasn’t quite “there yet”. I kept adding new things only to like a room less.
My basement and attic became the receptacles for things that I didn’t want to look at but wasn’t ready to give up. Stuff spilled out from my kitchen cabinets… gadgets and dishes that I never used. But I held on to them for that “one day I might need this” reason. I had a closet full of clothes and “nothing to wear”.

Curating a gallery wall is kind of like putting together a band. So many things have to be considered, and the strength of the individual is only important if it works within the context of the group. Even with an overall idea, the right grouping can take time. I do this for a living, and every time I approach a new project it still takes lots of “back to the drawing board” moments before something really good happens on a wall.
Last week I showed you guys my method for how to hang a gallery wall, but this week I’m breaking down the process I use to actually and pick and pair art. (I know…totally backwards. I should have shared this first.)
Remember back in the glory days of perms? A perm done right meant you were the coolest kid in the 6th grade. Done wrong and it was a pitiful sight that brought shame and tears. Gallery walls are pretty much exactly the same.
Oh gallery walls…all the cool kids have one.
They’re all over Pinterest, and HGTV, and your dream house.

Do you stand guard over a certain something in your house to make sure that the kids/dog/husband don’t get it dirty? Maybe you have an entire room that you feel the need to protect.
Parties are the worst because you’re constantly on “stain patrol” making sure no one takes Koolaid or red wine anywhere near your precious rug, chair, or (fill in the blank).
For years, I did the same thing too. It’s exhausting, isn’t it?
Sometimes we can be so fearful of mess and stains and
imperfections that we don’t fully enjoy our home for its true purpose.
Think about driving a brand new car off the lot…After the first 5 minutes of euphoria fades, then fear that something will flaw this perfectly new car sets in. You park as far away from other cars as you can. You only allow yourself to drink water in the car for fear of ruining that spotless upholstery. And then it happens. You scrape the side mirror on your mail box or hit that weirdly placed pole at the ATM. Or you let your guard down and spill coffee on the driver’s seat. (Gasp.) And then oddly enough, the fear disappears almost immediately.
After you curse under breath, suddenly you feel more at ease. Because “perfect” is no longer possible, and you don’t have to stress. [Read more…]
