Sara’s Houston Townhouse Makeover

Helllooo, friends. It has been a while. If we happen to be email friends, you’ve already heard about ALL. THE. LIFE. THINGS. that happened and kept me unplugged and off the blog last year.

(In a nutshell…a new baby, a move back to Missouri, a “new” old house, new jobs for both me and my husband. #emotionalwhiplash)

A Teen Bedroom Makeover

Starting middle school is a huge chapter for any “tween”. When my client called me, she said she wanted to completely make over her daughter’s room to celebrate finishing elementary school and entering 6th grade. She wanted a space that reflected her daughter’s personality and would also serve as a fun place for her friends to hang out.

How to Get Your Spouse on Board With Decorating

Most of the time when the aesthetics in a home change, it’s because one half of a couple wanted it. If you’re reading this, that person is most likely you. When one person cares more, it can feel like a game of tug o’ war as you fight for every little decorating move that happens in your home. Maybe you’re tired of the tension around this topic.

Or maybe your spouse grew an opinion on things seemingly overnight, and it’s totally messing with your plans.

You made the very logical assumption that because your spouse showed ZERO interest in your excitement over the latest issue of Domino magazine or didn’t care when a Home Goods opened up nearby that the world of decorating was dead to him.

My Home Office Makeover

Today I’m sharing the big reveal of my little home office makeover. This space has come a long way in two weeks.
(A big welcome to anyone visiting from Hi Sugarplum!. If you’re a regular around here, I’m participating in the Blogger Stylin’ Home Tours “Work & Play” edition today, hosted by my friend Lindsay of The White Buffalo Styling Co.)

Pulling it together in time to show you guys today was basically like a fast-paced sprint to the finish. While I have a specific timeline approach for client projects, my usual decorating method for my own home is more like an ambling walk on a country path where you pick up wildflowers and lay down for a nap when you get tired.

Lots and lots of “naps”.

But having a deadline really did force me to make a lot of progress in a short amount of time without over thinking things. (Which can happen when you move into a new space.) Seeing as how our bathrooms are trapped in 1994, most walls are blank, and my bedroom is a big greige box, this is now my favorite room in the house. I barely want to leave its four walls.

My Home Office Plans

I have not done a great job sharing my process for decorating my own home on the blog ever since I started helping clients with their homes. Since my ~~9:00-5:00~~ 9:00-3:30ish job has me neck deep in all things decor, when I have time to work on my own space I tend to move pretty fast and want to get near the finish line before having to switch gears from creating a plan to chatting about it.

I know a lot of design bloggers do a great job taking you through every decision they make and why they do it…I just can’t muster the energy, you guys.

Is that OK?

Sometimes I wonder if you would even want to know my detailed thoughts, or if you’d rather just see the “before and after” pictures. Confession: When I read blog posts, I usually just want to see the pictures.

Moving Back Into My Childhood Home

When my husband and I decided to move across the country and back into my childhood home, we knew it would be a major life change. What I didn’t realize was how long it would take me to get back into the swing of things. And we are very much trying to figure out what the new normal feels like. (I could say a lot more, but let’s just focus on the house for now.) It’s one month after our move, and I finally have enough boxes unpacked to show you the “new”/old house.

It’s a blank canvas, you guys.

You’re going to want to stare at a color wheel after this overload of beige, gray, and white.

Really…we are just swimming in a sea of neutrals right now.

But it’s ok.

Saying Goodbye To Our First House

Hello, friends. I’m going to get right to the point, because my emotions are high as I type this, and I’d rather not cry into my laptop if I can avoid it. This week we are packing up and preparing to leave our beloved first house.

And moving to Texas.

It’s a big move that has been in the works for months, but things weren’t totally finalized with the sale until recently. With all the work on The Bookshelf Styling Class and trying to wrap up local design projects, I just kept things quiet about the situation and tried to get through this hectic month. Since we close on the house next week, I think it’s safe to say it’s a “done deal”.

This may seem a bit out of the blue, but we’ve actually had our house on the market since September. After years of debating a move back to my hometown of Sugar Land, Texas my husband’s work situation finally worked out a way for him to relocate and keep his same job. It’s a decision we’ve really wrestled with for years, and now feels like the right time to try.

The Bookshelf Styling Class is Open!

For those of you who follow me on Instagram or email, you knew today was a big day. For months I’ve been working behind the scenes, and today The Bookshelf Styling Class is finally open for enrollment!

When I was first planning my online decorating classes, I decided to start with a class on how to style a bookshelf. Why? Because styling a bookshelf is TOUGH. It can feel like trying to do a puzzle with missing pieces (while on sedatives). You can arrange and rearrange a shelf 100 times and still feel confused as to why it isn’t working. Sound familiar?

But if you get it right, a well-styled bookshelf can be a total game changer.

Do You Have to Be Creative to Decorate?

“I think I missed the decorating gene when it was being handed out,” she said to me with an embarrassed chuckle.
