30th Birthday Brunch

This weekend we celebrated my 30th with a brunch at our house. We debated throwing a big party or going on a weekend trip, but nothing sounded right. (Why is it that we feel compelled to do this on milestone birthdays? Like if you don’t, then reaching that point is somehow less significant. Am I alone on this?)
Last week, we started planning a small brunch with close friends. Not a lot of fuss. The only requirement was good food. My friend Anna, who’s actually a baker by profession, agreed to be our “chef” and cook for us at the house. It was pure bliss not to have to stress about the food while still entertaining our friends.

French toast shooters and quiche
Skillet potatoes and onions with fried eggs
Shrimp and cheese grits; these were my favorite.
The “birthday cake” was crepes with sweet custard and pears.

My adorable goddaughter, Gianna, who after seeing my baby picture said, “Aww, Heather. You’s were kinda’ cute when you were a little baby! ” Would you look at the posing abilities of this kid? No prompting necessary.

This really is a family picture… While grazing on all the left over food after most people had left, Molly, Tanya, and I talked about how “old” it made us to think that we met ten years ago. It doesn’t seem that long ago that we were making Ramen noodles in the dorms and feeling like life hadn’t even started yet. It’s always risky when you invest yourself in people. (I think most of my 20’s was spent grappling with that concept.) The older I get, the more I value these “investments”; they didn’t just happen overnight. I’m pretty excited to see what the next decade has in store for our friendships and our families. Oh…and even when he’s making a Zoolander face, this guy’s pretty great too.

Happy Birthday!! You’re brunch was so lovely and a great idea. It sounds like the perfect way to recap and celebrate a milestone birthday. Lucky you to have a chef as a friend who created such a beautiful meal. Hope it was a really special day for you!

Happy 30th! This was such a sweet post, and yes I agree about the milestone birthdays. All I did for mine was a pancake breakfast and a massage-cause I was 38 weeks pregnant! :) I still turned 30 just like everyone else does who has a crazy insane go of it, and had fun making my own memories. It looks like you did the same. Lovely menu!

I think it was just garlic, onions, and potatoes seasoned with salt and pepper cooked on the stove top with olive oil until browned. Then chives were added. Eggs were cracked in top and the dish was put in the oven for the eggs to “fry”.
